Question: Younger siblings & college visits

I’m planning some college visits with my daughter this summer, and will have to bring her younger brother along, as my husband can’t get the time off from work. What is the etiquette around younger siblings tagging along for visits?

Hi there!

I find it really depends on the individual kid and how old he is. If we’re talking about a toddler, for example, it’s not really reasonable to expect him to sit through a 30-60 minute presentation and a tour and not be disruptive. It would be best for everyone – the admissions rep and any other families who are visiting at the same time as you – not to bring him along. That said, I’ve had plenty of elementary school-aged kids in my info sessions and most of them were fine. I’d advise some headphones and a tablet or phone game to keep them from getting too bored.
